Mike Fitzpatrick Announces His Candidacy |
|
Former US Congressman, Mike Fitzpatrick, who represented Pennsylvania's 8th District in the United States House of Representatives, is looking to be the current Representative of the 8th District. On January 23rd, Mike announced his candidacy to unseat Patrick Murphy in front of St. Mary's Hospital.
When interviewed on The Beat Goes On, Mike communicated his concerns: he thinks the Congress must do better with creating jobs and controlling the country's spending. He challenged Patrick Murphy's characterization as a fiscally conservative Blue Dog since he has voted 97% of the time with Nancy Pelosi. He also chose St Mary's to announce because it is the largest employer in buck's County.
The Beath Goes On will be following the race closely in the coming months... |

The Beat To Get a History Lesson from Rick Beyer |
|
One of the most popular segments of The Beat Goes On is the "History Lesson of the Day." We have brought you stories of the inventions of the oral thermometer, the blood pressure cuff (sphygmomanometer if you want to impress your friends), and the stethoscope. We have also brought you tales of adventure like the birth of the Iditarod and touching accounts like Dr. Howard Kelley forgiving a medical debt for a glass milk. We love the history and you have loved the segment. And we have one person who has inspired us:
Rick Beyer.
Rick is an historian, an author and an award-winning documentary producer. A frequent History Channel contributor, his books include the very popular series, The Greatest Stories Never Told, which have occassionally been featured on The Beat Goes On (like the stethoscope and the Iditarod stories above). They are packed with fascinating and obscure accounts of Presidents, General History and Wars.

His latest book is another treasure: The Greatest Science Stories Never Told.
Listen Saturday, January 16th for historian, documentarian and author Rick Beyer. We will ask him to recount one his stories. Perhaps he will even rant.
Either way, it will be a great show. Listen Saturdays, WNPV 1440AM at 8:10 am. The Beat Goes On... |

Dr. Jessica Feldman's Concussion Discussion |
|
Concussions have increasingly been in the news and The Beat Goes wanted to know more. So, Todd and Jeff asked Dr. Jessica Feldman, a neurologist in Sellersville and North Penn, to come into studio and lend her expertise to the show.
Dr. Feldman, from Penn Neurologic Group, answered all questions from "what is a concussion?" to "what do I do when my child has a concussion?" to "what are the long term implications?" The highlights of the interview were:
- - What is a concussion? an acute injury to the brain from blunt trauma. Essentially, the brain bangs against the closed skull and it damaged.
- - What are the symptoms? it can be confusion, amnesia, headache, dizziness, tinging in the ears, nausea or vomiting, fatigue. The key to the diagnosis is that the symptoms is that the symptoms are there after 15 minutes.
- - How long should I keep my child out of sports? The two rules of thumb mentioned by Dr. Feldman was to wait one week after symptoms stop or at least 1 week for each concussion suffered. For example, if a child has suffered his third concussion, he should wait at least three weeks to get back to activity. These are rules of thumb -- it is important to follow your physician's advice.
- - Are some people more prone to concussions? Absolutely! Some people are born with a greater susceptibility to brain trauma. Also dare-devils who do not wear helmets and take risks are also more prone. Lastly, once someone has had a concussion, he or she has a greater risk of another concussion.
- - What are the long term dangers of concussions? There is increasing evidence that multiple concussions can have a long term impact on brain function. There is still much research being done (consider what is happening in the NFL).
The Beat Goes On thanks Dr. Feldman for her time and expertise. To listen to her entire interview, visit Listen to the Beat and hear much more.
